How A Richmond Homeowner Turned His Classic Shed Into A Home Office
When Alex Sawyer set out to create his dream workspace, he didn’t settle for a corner of his house or a spare bedroom. Instead, he partnered with Valley Structures to bring his vision of a custom shed-turned-home office to life.
A Creative Space To Call His Own.
In July 2024, Alex decided it was finally time to carve out a dedicated space for his work:
“The shed has been a dream of mine for a while. We now have two kids, two dogs and two cats, so I’ve been looking for a space to be mine. I’d have to move whenever I set up in a room. I was out of space and sometimes needed to take calls or meetings. I started looking online for the best solution.”

Alex chose a 12’x20’ classic shed with a durable metal roof to balance sleek style and functionality. To make it truly his own, he opted for custom features, including:
- Spray foam-insulated floors for comfort in all seasons.
- High-quality windows with screens to let in natural light and fresh air.
- A stylish corner entry door with a sidelight that opens for wider access.
“It’s not just a shed,” Alex explained. “I wanted it to be a livable, insulated space where I could store possessions and keep them sealed from the weather.”
Turning Alex’s Vision Into Reality.
Valley Structures delivered Alex’s shed just a few miles from their Richmond location (Mechanicsville). The customizations took about ten weeks to complete, but for Alex, the result was worth the wait.
Since delivery, he’s been documenting his DIY journey to turn his classic shed into a home office studio, proving it can be more than just storage—it’s a great solution for entrepreneurs, small business owners or anyone working from home.
